Samuel Rousseau was a French composer and music educator who lived from 1853 to 1904. He was a student of César Franck and became a professor of harmony at the Paris Conservatory in 1886. Rousseau composed a number of works for organ, including his Offertoire in F major. The Offertoire in F major was composed in 1898 and premiered the same year. It is a single-movement work for organ that lasts approximately six minutes. The piece is written in F major and is in 4/4 time. The Offertoire in F major begins with a slow and solemn introduction that features a melody played in the pedal. This melody is then taken up by the manuals and developed further. The main section of the piece is marked Allegro and features a lively and rhythmic melody played in the manuals. This melody is accompanied by a series of arpeggios played in the pedals. The Offertoire in F major is characterized by its use of counterpoint and its rich harmonies. Rousseau was known for his skill in writing counterpoint, and this is evident in the way that the different melodies in the piece interact with each other. The harmonies in the piece are also quite complex, with Rousseau using a number of chromatic chords to create a sense of tension and release. Overall, the Offertoire in F major is a beautiful and expressive work for organ that showcases Rousseau's skill as a composer. Its combination of counterpoint and rich harmonies make it a challenging but rewarding piece for organists to perform.
