"Virginia" is an opera in three acts composed by Saverio Mercadante. The opera was composed in 1866 and premiered on January 7, 1866, at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy. The libretto was written by Salvatore Cammarano, who also wrote the libretto for Verdi's "Il Trovatore." The plot of "Virginia" is based on the story of Virginia, a Roman maiden who was forced to marry the tyrant Appius Claudius. When Virginia's father, Virginius, learns of the marriage, he kills his daughter to save her from a life of slavery. The opera follows the story of Virginia and her family as they struggle against the tyranny of Appius Claudius. The first act of the opera takes place in Rome, where Virginia and her family live. The second act takes place in the palace of Appius Claudius, where Virginia is taken after her marriage. The third act takes place in the Forum, where Virginius kills his daughter and confronts Appius Claudius. The music of "Virginia" is characterized by its dramatic intensity and emotional depth. The opera features a number of powerful arias and duets, including Virginia's aria "Ah! Non credea mirarti" and the duet between Virginia and her father, "Ah! Si, per voi morirei." "Virginia" is considered one of Mercadante's most important works and is often compared to Verdi's "Il Trovatore" for its dramatic intensity and emotional power. The opera was well-received at its premiere and has since been performed in opera houses around the world.
