"Croesus" is an opera composed by Reinhard Keiser in 1711. The plot is based on the story of King Croesus of Lydia, who was known for his wealth and power. The opera is divided into three acts and features a libretto by Johann Ulrich König. The first act introduces the character of Croesus, who is visited by the god Apollo. Apollo warns Croesus that his wealth and power will not protect him from the fates. Croesus ignores the warning and continues to revel in his wealth and power. In the second act, Croesus is visited by the Persian king Cyrus, who demands that Croesus submit to his rule. Croesus refuses and declares war on Cyrus. The war ends in a stalemate, and Croesus is captured by Cyrus. The third act sees Croesus on trial before Cyrus. Croesus is given the opportunity to save his life by answering a riddle, but he fails and is sentenced to death. However, Cyrus has a change of heart and decides to spare Croesus. The opera premiered in Hamburg in 1711 and was well-received by audiences. It features a number of memorable arias and duets, including "Ombre, larve, spettri" and "Se il mio cor ti dona". Keiser's music is characterized by its dramatic intensity and emotional depth. He was known for his ability to create vivid musical portraits of his characters, and "Croesus" is no exception. The opera is a powerful exploration of the themes of power, wealth, and fate, and remains a popular work in the operatic repertoire.
