The Seven Magnificat Antiphons, also known as the O Antiphons, are a series of seven chants that are traditionally sung during the week leading up to Christmas Eve. These antiphons are based on the Magnificat, a hymn of praise to the Virgin Mary found in the Gospel of Luke. The Seven Magnificat Antiphons were composed by an unknown author in the early Middle Ages, and were later set to music by various composers throughout history. One of the most famous settings of the antiphons was composed by the Renaissance composer Tomas Luis de Victoria in the 16th century. The Seven Magnificat Antiphons are typically sung during Vespers, the evening prayer service in the Catholic Church. Each antiphon is associated with a different name of Christ, and reflects on a different aspect of his character and mission. The first antiphon, "O Sapientia" (O Wisdom), is sung on December 17th and reflects on Christ's role as the source of all wisdom and knowledge. The second antiphon, "O Adonai" (O Lord), is sung on December 18th and reflects on Christ's role as the Lord and Master of all creation. The third antiphon, "O Radix Jesse" (O Root of Jesse), is sung on December 19th and reflects on Christ's lineage as a descendant of King David. The fourth antiphon, "O Clavis David" (O Key of David), is sung on December 20th and reflects on Christ's role as the one who unlocks the gates of heaven. The fifth antiphon, "O Oriens" (O Dayspring), is sung on December 21st and reflects on Christ's role as the light of the world. The sixth antiphon, "O Rex Gentium" (O King of the Nations), is sung on December 22nd and reflects on Christ's role as the ruler of all nations. The seventh antiphon, "O Emmanuel" (O God with us), is sung on December 23rd and reflects on Christ's role as the one who is always with us. Each antiphon is characterized by its rich theological content and its beautiful musical setting. The Seven Magnificat Antiphons are a beloved part of the Christmas season, and continue to be sung and celebrated by Christians around the world.
