Elisabeth Lutyens was a British composer who was known for her avant-garde and experimental style. She composed a number of works for various ensembles, including the Triolet I & II, Op. 160a & b, which were written for piano trio. Triolet I was composed in 1973 and premiered the same year at the Cheltenham Festival. It consists of three movements: Allegro, Adagio, and Allegro vivace. The first movement is characterized by its rhythmic drive and angular melodies, while the second movement is more introspective and features a lyrical cello solo. The final movement is a lively and energetic dance, with a playful and virtuosic piano part. Triolet II was composed in 1974 and premiered the following year at the Aldeburgh Festival. It also consists of three movements: Allegro, Adagio, and Allegro vivace. The first movement is marked by its driving rhythms and dissonant harmonies, while the second movement is more atmospheric and features a haunting violin melody. The final movement is a lively and playful dance, with a virtuosic piano part and intricate interplay between the violin and cello. Both Triolet I & II showcase Lutyens' unique style, which combines elements of serialism, atonality, and free improvisation. Her use of unconventional harmonies, complex rhythms, and extended techniques creates a sense of tension and unpredictability, while her lyrical melodies and expressive use of timbre add a sense of emotional depth and complexity. Overall, Triolet I & II are challenging and rewarding works that showcase Lutyens' innovative approach to composition and her ability to push the boundaries of traditional classical music.
