"Catone in Utica" is an opera seria in three acts composed by Leonardo Leo. The libretto was written by Pietro Metastasio and was first performed in Rome in 1728. The opera tells the story of the Roman statesman Cato the Younger, who is torn between his duty to the Roman Republic and his love for the Numidian queen, Juba's daughter, Marzia. The first act opens with Cato, who has been appointed governor of Utica, a city in North Africa, receiving news that Julius Caesar has defeated Pompey in battle. Cato is torn between his loyalty to the Roman Republic and his hatred for Caesar, who he believes is a tyrant. Meanwhile, Marzia, the daughter of Juba, the king of Numidia, arrives in Utica disguised as a slave. She is in love with Cato and hopes to win his heart. In the second act, Marzia reveals her true identity to Cato and confesses her love for him. Cato is torn between his duty to Rome and his love for Marzia. He ultimately decides to remain loyal to Rome and rejects Marzia's advances. Marzia is heartbroken and decides to leave Utica. In the final act, Caesar arrives in Utica and demands that Cato surrender. Cato refuses and prepares for battle. Marzia returns to Utica and tries to convince Cato to flee with her, but he refuses. In the end, Cato is defeated in battle and chooses to take his own life rather than be captured by Caesar. "Catone in Utica" is characterized by its beautiful arias and duets, which showcase Leo's skill as a composer. The opera also features a number of choruses, which add to the dramatic tension of the story. The music is characterized by its use of counterpoint and its intricate harmonies. The premiere of "Catone in Utica" was a great success and the opera went on to be performed throughout Europe. It is considered one of Leo's greatest works and is still performed today.
