Masaniello furioso is an opera composed by Reinhard Keiser in 1706. The plot is based on the historical figure of Masaniello, a fisherman who led a revolt against the Spanish rulers of Naples in 1647. The opera is divided into three acts and features a libretto by Christian Heinrich Postel. The first act introduces the character of Masaniello, who is in love with the Spanish noblewoman Leonora. However, their love is forbidden due to their different social statuses. Masaniello becomes increasingly frustrated with the Spanish rule and decides to lead a rebellion against them. He is joined by his fellow fishermen and the people of Naples. In the second act, the rebellion gains momentum and Masaniello becomes more and more powerful. However, he begins to lose sight of his original goals and becomes consumed by his own power. He becomes paranoid and starts to suspect his own followers of treachery. Leonora tries to reason with him, but he refuses to listen. The third act sees the downfall of Masaniello. He is betrayed by his own followers and is eventually killed by the Spanish. Leonora is left alone and devastated by the loss of her lover. The opera features a number of musical movements, including arias, duets, and choruses. The music is characterized by its dramatic intensity and emotional depth. Keiser was known for his ability to create complex and nuanced characters through his music, and Masaniello furioso is no exception. The opera premiered in Hamburg in 1706 and was a great success. It was later performed in other cities throughout Europe, including London and Vienna. Today, it is considered one of Keiser's most important works and is still occasionally performed.
