"Tanzer Lieder" is a contemporary classical composition by Serbian-Canadian composer Ana Sokolovic. The piece was composed in 2017 and premiered on March 2, 2018, by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Peter Oundjian. The composition consists of five movements, each of which is based on a different dance style. The first movement, "Tango," is a sultry and passionate dance that features a prominent accordion solo. The second movement, "Waltz," is a graceful and elegant dance that features a lilting melody played by the strings. The third movement, "Hora," is a lively and energetic dance that features a driving rhythm and intricate melodies played by the woodwinds. The fourth movement, "Sarabande," is a slow and stately dance that features a haunting melody played by the strings. The final movement, "Tarantella," is a frenzied and exhilarating dance that features a fast-paced rhythm and virtuosic solos by various instruments. One of the defining characteristics of "Tanzer Lieder" is its use of folk dance styles from various cultures. Sokolovic draws on her Serbian heritage as well as other European and South American dance traditions to create a diverse and eclectic musical landscape. Another notable feature of the composition is its use of unconventional instrumentation, such as the accordion and the mandolin, which add unique timbres and textures to the music. Overall, "Tanzer Lieder" is a vibrant and engaging work that showcases Sokolovic's skill as a composer and her ability to blend different musical styles and traditions into a cohesive and compelling whole.
