Symphony No. 9, Op. 140 The Resurrection Sinfonia Sacra is a choral symphony composed by Edmund Rubbra in 1977. The symphony was premiered on 17th November 1978 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky. The symphony is divided into three movements. The first movement, marked Adagio, begins with a solemn and mysterious introduction by the orchestra. The music gradually builds in intensity, leading to the entrance of the choir, singing a setting of the Latin hymn "Veni Creator Spiritus". The movement is characterized by its use of dense harmonies and complex counterpoint, as well as its dramatic shifts in dynamics and tempo. The second movement, marked Allegro con brio, is a lively and energetic scherzo. The music is characterized by its driving rhythms and playful melodies, as well as its use of unconventional harmonies and unexpected shifts in tonality. The movement features a prominent role for the percussion section, which adds to the sense of excitement and energy. The third and final movement, marked Adagio - Allegro moderato, is the longest and most complex of the three. The movement begins with a slow and mournful introduction, featuring a solo violin and a setting of the Latin hymn "Dies Irae". The music gradually builds in intensity, leading to the entrance of the choir, singing a setting of the English text "I am the Resurrection and the Life". The movement is characterized by its use of rich harmonies and lush orchestration, as well as its dramatic shifts in mood and tempo. The movement ends with a triumphant and joyful coda, featuring a setting of the Latin text "Gloria in excelsis Deo". Overall, Symphony No. 9, Op. 140 The Resurrection Sinfonia Sacra is a powerful and deeply spiritual work, characterized by its use of complex harmonies, intricate counterpoint, and dramatic shifts in mood and tempo. The symphony is a testament to Rubbra's skill as a composer, and stands as one of his most significant and enduring works.
