Composer:Pierre CochereauGenre:KeyboardStyle:KeyboardMovement_count:5Movement ....Pierre Cochereau's 'Improvisations (13) sur les versets des Vêpres' is a collection of thirteen improvisations on the verses of the Vespers. Cochereau, who was the organist of Notre-Dame de Paris from 1955 until his death in 1984, composed these improvisations in 1974. The premiere of the work took place on 22 September 1974, during the inauguration of the new organ of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. The work is divided into thirteen movements, each corresponding to one of the verses of the Vespers. Cochereau's improvisations are characterized by their virtuosity, their harmonic richness, and their ability to evoke the liturgical texts. The improvisations are also notable for their use of various organ techniques, such as the use of the pedals, the use of the swell box, and the use of the reed stops. The first movement, based on the verse "Deus in adiutorium meum intende" (God, come to my assistance), is characterized by its majestic opening, which gradually builds in intensity. The second movement, based on the verse "Domine, ad adiuvandum me festina" (Lord, make haste to help me), is characterized by its use of the pedals, which create a sense of urgency and momentum. The third movement, based on the verse "Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto" (Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit), is characterized by its use of the swell box, which creates a sense of distance and mystery. The fourth movement, based on the verse "Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen" (As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen), is characterized by its use of the reed stops, which create a sense of joy and celebration. The remaining movements continue to explore the various themes and moods of the Vespers, with Cochereau's improvisations ranging from contemplative to exuberant. Overall, 'Improvisations (13) sur les versets des Vêpres' is a testament to Cochereau's virtuosity and his ability to evoke the liturgical texts through his improvisations.More....
