The operetta is divided into three acts and features several memorable songs, including "Ich bin eine anständige Frau", "Ich hab' kein Geld, bin vogelfrei", and "Ich bin verliebt". The first act takes place in Paris, where Alice arrives with her aunt and uncle. She meets Prince Danilo at a ball and they dance together. The third act takes place in Danilo's homeland of Pontevedro. Alice travels there to see Danilo and they confess their love for each other. However, Danilo's family and the people of Pontevedro are opposed to their relationship because of Alice's American background.
