"Arminio" is an opera seria in three acts composed by Antonio Lotti. The libretto was written by Domenico Lalli and is based on the story of Arminius, a Germanic prince who led a successful rebellion against the Roman Empire in the first century AD. The opera was composed in 1710 and premiered in Venice at the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo on January 12, 1710. The first act opens with Arminio, the leader of the Germanic tribes, preparing for battle against the Roman army. He is joined by his wife Tusnelda, who urges him to fight for their people's freedom. The Roman general Varo arrives and attempts to negotiate a peace treaty, but Arminio refuses and the battle begins. In the end, the Germans are victorious and Varo is taken prisoner. The second act takes place in a Roman prison, where Varo is being held captive. He is visited by his wife Sigismonda, who pleads with him to renounce his loyalty to Rome and join the Germanic cause. Varo refuses and is sentenced to death. Meanwhile, Tusnelda is captured by the Romans and brought before the Emperor Tiberius. She refuses to renounce her loyalty to Arminio and is sentenced to death as well. The final act takes place on the day of the executions. Arminio and his army arrive to rescue Tusnelda, but are met by the Roman army. In the ensuing battle, Arminio is mortally wounded and dies in Tusnelda's arms. Varo, who has had a change of heart, joins the Germanic cause and helps them achieve victory over the Romans. "Arminio" is characterized by its dramatic storyline, which is filled with political intrigue, betrayal, and heroic sacrifice. The music is typical of the opera seria genre, with arias, recitatives, and ensemble pieces that showcase the vocal talents of the performers. The score features a variety of musical styles, including dance music, military marches, and lyrical love songs. Overall, "Arminio" is a powerful and emotionally charged opera that explores themes of loyalty, patriotism, and the struggle for freedom. Its premiere in Venice was a great success, and it remains a popular work in the operatic repertoire to this day.
