Carl Stamitz was a German composer and violinist who lived from 1745 to 1801. He was a prolific composer of instrumental music, particularly for the violin, and was one of the leading figures of the Mannheim School. One of his most famous works is the Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola & orchestra in D major. The Sinfonia Concertante was composed in the late 1770s or early 1780s, and was premiered in Mannheim, Germany in 1783. It is a three-movement work, with a typical performance lasting around 25 minutes. The first movement is marked Allegro con spirito, and begins with a lively and energetic theme played by the orchestra. The solo violin and viola then enter, playing a more lyrical and expressive melody. The movement features a number of virtuosic passages for both soloists, as well as some beautiful interplay between the two instruments. The second movement is marked Andante con moto, and is a slow and contemplative piece. The solo violin and viola play a duet, with the orchestra providing a gentle accompaniment. The movement is notable for its beautiful melodies and expressive harmonies. The final movement is marked Allegro, and is a lively and energetic piece. The soloists and orchestra engage in a playful dialogue, with the soloists often playing in unison or in close harmony. The movement features a number of virtuosic passages for both soloists, and ends with a triumphant flourish. Overall, the Sinfonia Concertante is a beautiful and engaging work that showcases the talents of both the soloists and the orchestra. It is a testament to Stamitz's skill as a composer, and remains a popular piece in the repertoire of classical music.
