Franz Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 76 in E flat major, H. 1/76, was composed in 1782 during his tenure as Kapellmeister for the Esterházy family. The symphony premiered in the same year at the Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria. The symphony consists of four movements: 1. Adagio - Allegro: The first movement begins with a slow and solemn introduction in the key of E flat major, followed by a lively and energetic Allegro section in sonata form. The movement features a prominent horn melody and a playful dialogue between the strings and winds. 2. Poco adagio, cantabile: The second movement is a lyrical and expressive Poco adagio in the key of C minor. The main theme is introduced by the strings and is later developed by the winds. The movement features a beautiful solo for the oboe. 3. Menuetto: The third movement is a graceful and elegant Menuetto in the key of E flat major. The movement features a charming trio section in the key of A flat major, which showcases the woodwinds. 4. Finale: Allegro, ma non troppo: The final movement is a lively and spirited Allegro in sonata form. The movement features a playful dialogue between the strings and winds, as well as a virtuosic solo for the violin. Haydn's Symphony No. 76 is characterized by its elegant and refined melodies, lively rhythms, and playful use of orchestration. The symphony showcases Haydn's mastery of the classical symphonic form and his ability to create music that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally engaging.
