Vsevolod Zaderatsky's Prelude and Fugue No. 7 for piano in A major was composed in 1937 while the composer was serving a 10-year sentence in a Soviet labor camp. The piece was premiered in 1979, over 40 years after its composition, by pianist Maria Yudina. The Prelude is marked "Andante con moto" and begins with a lyrical melody in the right hand accompanied by arpeggiated chords in the left hand. The melody is then repeated with added ornamentation and a more complex accompaniment. The middle section of the Prelude features a more agitated and dissonant texture before returning to the opening melody. The Fugue is marked "Allegro moderato" and begins with a lively subject in the right hand accompanied by a steady bass line in the left hand. The subject is then imitated in the left hand and developed throughout the piece with various counterpoint techniques. The middle section of the Fugue features a more chromatic and dissonant texture before returning to the opening subject. Zaderatsky's Prelude and Fugue No. 7 showcases his mastery of traditional Western classical forms and his ability to incorporate modernist techniques. The piece also reflects the composer's resilience and determination to continue creating music despite the harsh conditions of his imprisonment.
