During his time in prison, he composed over 100 works, including 24 Preludes and Fugues for piano. The second Prelude and Fugue in A minor is one of his most well-known works. The Prelude is marked "Andante con moto" and begins with a melancholic melody in the right hand accompanied by a simple arpeggiated pattern in the left hand. The melody is then repeated with slight variations and the left hand becomes more active, adding more notes to the arpeggiated pattern. The middle section of the Prelude is more agitated, with a faster tempo and more complex rhythms. The opening melody returns at the end of the Prelude, but with a more subdued character. The Fugue is marked "Allegro moderato" and begins with a subject in the right hand that is then imitated in the left hand. The subject is then developed through various keys and textures, with the left hand often playing a more active role than in the Prelude. The middle section of the Fugue is more contrapuntal, with the subject appearing in different voices and with different rhythmic patterns. The Fugue ends with a triumphant restatement of the subject in the original key. Overall, the second Prelude and Fugue in A minor is a work of great emotional depth and technical skill. Zaderatsky's use of simple melodies and arpeggiated patterns in the Prelude creates a sense of nostalgia and longing, while the more complex textures and contrapuntal writing in the Fugue demonstrate his mastery of the fugue form. The work was composed in the 1940s and premiered in 1950, after Zaderatsky's release from prison.More....
