"Reinas de la Baraja" is a composition for orchestra by the Spanish composer Roberto Gerhard. It was composed in 1950 and premiered on May 17, 1951, at the Royal Festival Hall in London, conducted by the composer himself. The piece is divided into four movements, each one inspired by a different queen from a deck of cards. The first movement, "Reina de Corazones" (Queen of Hearts), is characterized by a lively and playful rhythm, with a prominent use of percussion instruments. The second movement, "Reina de Diamantes" (Queen of Diamonds), is more introspective and melancholic, with a haunting melody played by the strings. The third movement, "Reina de Picas" (Queen of Spades), is the most dissonant and aggressive of the four, with a frenzied and chaotic atmosphere created by the use of brass and percussion. The final movement, "Reina de Tréboles" (Queen of Clubs), is a joyful and festive dance, with a lively rhythm and a prominent use of woodwind instruments. Overall, "Reinas de la Baraja" is a highly original and innovative composition, showcasing Gerhard's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create vivid and evocative musical images. The piece is also notable for its use of serial techniques, which were still relatively new at the time of its composition. Despite its modernist tendencies, however, "Reinas de la Baraja" remains accessible and engaging, with a strong sense of rhythm and melody that makes it a pleasure to listen to.
