"Ich wandte mich und sahe an alle" (I turned myself and looked upon all) is a choral work composed by Johannes Brahms in 1890. It is the second of his two motets, Op. 121, and is based on a text from the Book of Ecclesiastes. The piece premiered on March 10, 1891, in Vienna, conducted by Brahms himself. It is written for a mixed choir of four parts (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass) and is approximately six minutes long. The motet is divided into three movements, each with its own distinct character. The first movement is marked "Andante con moto" and is characterized by a flowing, lyrical melody in the soprano and alto voices. The tenor and bass parts provide a rich harmonic foundation, with occasional moments of dissonance that add tension to the piece. The second movement is marked "Allegro di molto" and is much more lively and energetic than the first. The choir sings in unison for much of this movement, with occasional bursts of polyphony that add complexity and depth to the texture. The final movement is marked "Andante" and is the most contemplative of the three. The choir sings in a homophonic texture, with all four parts moving together in harmony. The melody is simple and plaintive, with a sense of resignation and acceptance that is fitting for the text. Overall, "Ich wandte mich und sahe an alle" is a beautiful and deeply moving work that showcases Brahms' mastery of choral composition. Its rich harmonies, complex textures, and expressive melodies make it a favorite among choral singers and audiences alike.
