"Chi vuol la zingarella" is an opera buffa in two acts composed by Giovanni Paisiello. The opera premiered on February 16, 1786, at the Teatro dei Fiorentini in Naples, Italy. The libretto was written by Giuseppe Palomba, and the opera was a great success, becoming one of Paisiello's most popular works. The opera is set in Spain and tells the story of a young gypsy girl named Zingarella, who falls in love with a nobleman named Don Carlo. Don Carlo is engaged to the beautiful and wealthy Donna Isabella, but he is drawn to Zingarella's free spirit and passion. Zingarella, however, is not interested in Don Carlo's advances and is determined to marry her true love, the gypsy chief, Gennaro. The opera is divided into two acts, each with several musical numbers. The first act opens with a lively chorus of gypsies celebrating their freedom and love of life. Zingarella's first aria, "Non mi dir," is a beautiful and melancholic piece in which she expresses her longing for true love. Don Carlo's entrance is marked by a lively duet with his servant, in which he expresses his desire for adventure and excitement. The second act opens with a beautiful aria by Donna Isabella, "Ah, non mi dir," in which she expresses her love for Don Carlo and her fear of losing him to Zingarella. The climax of the opera comes in the final scene, in which Don Carlo must choose between his duty to his family and his love for Zingarella. In a dramatic finale, he chooses love and marries Zingarella, much to the dismay of his family and Donna Isabella. "Chi vuol la zingarella" is a classic example of the opera buffa genre, characterized by its light-hearted and comedic tone. The music is lively and energetic, with many memorable arias and duets. Paisiello's use of the orchestra is particularly noteworthy, with the music often reflecting the emotions and actions of the characters on stage. Overall, "Chi vuol la zingarella" is a charming and entertaining opera that has stood the test of time. Its themes of love, freedom, and the clash of social classes are still relevant today, and its music continues to delight audiences around the world.
