Hennigar began his musical training at the age of six, studying the piano with his mother. He showed exceptional talent and quickly progressed to more advanced pieces. At the age of ten, he began studying the violin with his father. Hennigar's father was a strict teacher, and he demanded perfection from his son. Hennigar rose to the challenge and became an accomplished violinist. In 1942, Hennigar enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied under the renowned violinist Ivan Galamian, who was known for his rigorous teaching methods. Hennigar thrived under Galamian's tutelage and quickly became one of his star pupils. He graduated from Juilliard in 1946 with a Bachelor of Music degree. After graduating from Juilliard, Hennigar began his professional career as a soloist.
