Born on June 28, 1912, in the city of Santos, Brazil, Carvalho showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study composition and conducting at the São Paulo Conservatory of Music. Carvalho's career as a conductor began in the 1940s when he was appointed as the conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation for his dynamic and passionate performances, and his career soon took off. In 1950, he was invited to conduct the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, which was a major milestone in his career. Over the course of his career, Carvalho conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He was also a regular guest conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. One of Carvalho's most significant achievements was his work with the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (OSESP). He was appointed as the orchestra's principal conductor in 1972 and held the position until 1996. During his tenure, he transformed the orchestra into one of the leading ensembles in South America, and it became known for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. Carvalho was also a prolific composer, and his works were performed by many of the world's leading orchestras. His compositions were influenced by Brazilian folk music and often featured elements of jazz and other popular music styles. Throughout his career, Carvalho received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1978, he was awarded the Order of Rio Branco, which is one of Brazil's highest honors. He was also awarded the National Order of Merit by the French government in 1985. Carvalho passed away on September 12, 1996, at the age of 84.
