Artist Info
The Sinfonieorchester Des Norddeutschen Rundfunks, also known as the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Hamburg, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1945 by the North German Radio (NDR) broadcasting company, which sought to establish a professional orchestra to perform on its radio programs. The orchestra's founding conductor was Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, a prominent German conductor who had previously led the Berlin Philharmonic and the Hamburg State Opera. Under his leadership, the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for excellence, performing a wide range of classical repertoire and collaborating with some of the world's leading soloists and conductors. Over the years, the orchestra has had a number of distinguished conductors, including Günter Wand, Christoph Eschenbach, and Thomas Hengelbrock. Each of these conductors has brought their own unique vision and style to the orchestra, helping to shape its sound and reputation. One of the orchestra's most notable achievements was its participation in the 1955 Salzburg Festival, where it performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. This performance was widely praised and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in Europe. In addition to its concert performances, the orchestra has also been active in the recording studio, producing numerous acclaimed recordings of classical repertoire. Some of its most notable recordings include a complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies under the direction of Günter Wand, as well as recordings of works by Brahms, Bruckner, and Mahler. The orchestra has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2000, it was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Brahms' Symphony No. 1, and in 2011 it received the German Record Critics' Award for its recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 9. Today, the Sinfonieorchester Des Norddeutschen Rundfunks continues to be one of the leading classical music ensembles in Europe, performing regularly in Hamburg and on tour throughout the world. Its commitment to excellence and its dedication to preserving and promoting the classical music tradition have made it a beloved institution among music lovers around the globe.More....
