McIntosh began playing the violin at the age of four and later learned to play the piano and guitar. McIntosh attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of California, San Diego, where he studied with Roger Reynolds and Chinary Ung. McIntosh also holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied with Mark Carlson and Paul Chihara. McIntosh's compositions are known for their intricate harmonies and use of microtonal tuning systems. He has been influenced by the works of composers such as György Ligeti, Morton Feldman, and Iannis Xenakis. McIntosh's music has been performed by ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the JACK Quartet, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. One of McIntosh's most notable works is his string quartet "Irrational Music," which was commissioned by the JACK Quartet in 2012. The piece is based on the concept of irrational numbers and uses a microtonal tuning system to create a unique harmonic language.
