Sonata Islands is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is based in Tokyo, Japan, and is known for its innovative and dynamic performances that blend classical and contemporary music. The founding members of Sonata Islands were violinist Tomoko Momiyama, violist Yoko Ikeda, cellist Tomoko Fujita, and pianist Yukiko Takagi. All four musicians had extensive experience performing in various orchestras and chamber groups, and they came together with the goal of creating a unique ensemble that would showcase their individual talents and musical styles. From the beginning, Sonata Islands was committed to exploring new and unconventional approaches to classical music. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as contemporary pieces by living composers like John Adams, Philip Glass, and Arvo Pärt. One of the highlights of Sonata Islands' early career was their performance at the 2006 Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden festival in Tokyo. The ensemble received critical acclaim for their interpretation of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131, which was described as "powerful and emotionally charged." In 2008, Sonata Islands released their debut album, "Sonata Islands Plays Mozart," which featured their interpretations of Mozart's Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K. 478, and Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major, K. 493. The album received positive reviews and helped to establish the ensemble as one of the most exciting new chamber groups in Japan. Over the years, Sonata Islands has continued to push the boundaries of classical music with their innovative programming and dynamic performances. In 2012, the ensemble collaborated with the Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto on a performance of his piece "async," which was originally written for solo piano. The ensemble's arrangement of the piece for piano quartet was praised for its "rich and complex textures" and "dramatic intensity." In 2015, Sonata Islands was invited to perform at the prestigious Salzburg Festival in Austria, where they presented a program of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and the contemporary composer Toshio Hosokawa. The ensemble's performance was hailed as "a revelation" by critics, who praised their "impeccable technique" and "passionate interpretation." In addition to their performances, Sonata Islands has also been recognized for their recordings. In 2017, the ensemble released their second album, "Sonata Islands Plays Glass," which featured their interpretations of works by the American composer Philip Glass. The album received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance category. Today, Sonata Islands continues to be one of the most exciting and innovative chamber groups in the world. The ensemble's current members include violinist Tomoko Momiyama, violist Yoko Ikeda, cellist Tomoko Fujita, and pianist Mami Shikimori.
