He was the youngest of four siblings and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. Ombuena's parents recognized his musical talent at a young age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Ombuena began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons from his mother. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and progressed rapidly. At the age of ten, he gave his first public performance, playing a Mozart piano concerto with the Valencia Symphony Orchestra. In 1940, Ombuena enrolled at the Valencia Conservatory of Music, where he studied piano, composition, and conducting. He was an exceptional student and won several awards for his performances and compositions. In 1945, he graduated with honors and was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid. During his time in Madrid, Ombuena continued to excel in his studies and won several prestigious awards, including the National Prize for Piano Performance and the National Prize for Composition. He also had the opportunity to perform with some of the most renowned orchestras in Spain, including the Madrid Symphony Orchestra and the National Orchestra of Spain. In 1950, Ombuena was invited to perform at the International Piano Festival in Geneva, Switzerland. His performance was a huge success, and he received critical acclaim from the audience and the press. This performance marked the beginning of Ombuena's international career, and he soon became a sought-after performer in Europe and the United States. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Ombuena performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He also recorded several albums, including a collection of Beethoven's piano sonatas, which received widespread critical acclaim. In addition to his career as a performer, Ombuena was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at several music schools and conservatories, including the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music, and Ombuena was widely regarded as one of the most influential piano teachers of his time. Throughout his career, Ombuena received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1965, he was awarded the Gold Medal of Fine Arts by the Spanish government, and in 1972, he was awarded the National Prize for Music.
