Arthur Loosli was a Swiss classical pianist and composer who was born on January 1, 1891, in Zurich, Switzerland. He was the youngest of four children and showed an early interest in music. His father, a businessman, recognized his son's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Loosli began his musical education at the Zurich Conservatory, where he studied piano with Carl Friedberg and composition with Volkmar Andreae. He later continued his studies in Berlin with Ferruccio Busoni, who had a profound influence on his musical development. In 1913, Loosli made his debut as a pianist in Zurich, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. The performance was a great success, and Loosli quickly established himself as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Over the next few years, Loosli performed extensively throughout Europe, playing with many of the leading orchestras and conductors of the time. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schumann, and his performances were praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. In 1920, Loosli made his debut in the United States, performing with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Willem Mengelberg. The performance was a triumph, and Loosli quickly became a favorite of American audiences. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Loosli continued to perform extensively, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. He also began to compose his own music, and his works were performed by many of the leading orchestras and ensembles of the time. In 1939, Loosli was forced to flee Europe due to the outbreak of World War II. He settled in the United States, where he continued to perform and compose. He also became a respected teacher, and many of his students went on to have successful careers in music. In 1951, Loosli was awarded the Swiss Music Prize in recognition of his contributions to Swiss music. He continued to perform and compose until his death on December 22, 1954, in New York City.
