He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. From a young age, Flury showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano and violin at the age of six. Flury's musical talent was recognized early on, and he was accepted into the Lucerne Conservatory at the age of 14. He studied under the renowned Swiss violinist Max Rostal and later under the Hungarian violinist Sandor Vegh. Flury's talent and dedication to his craft were evident from the start, and he quickly became one of the most promising young violinists in Switzerland. In 1961, Flury made his debut as a soloist with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, performing Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3. The performance was a resounding success, and Flury was praised for his technical skill and musicality. This performance marked the beginning of Flury's career as a soloist, and he went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Flury's repertoire was vast and included works by many of the great composers, including Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Mozart and Beethoven, and his recordings of their violin concertos are considered some of the finest ever made. In addition to his work as a soloist, Flury was also a dedicated chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Lucerne String Quartet, which was formed in 1966 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest string quartets in Europe. The quartet performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States and recorded many acclaimed albums. Flury's career was marked by many highlights, including his performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1972, where he performed Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and Flury was praised for his sensitive and nuanced interpretation of the work. Flury was also the recipient of many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1974, he was awarded the Prix de Lausanne, one of the most prestigious awards for young musicians in Switzerland. In 1982, he was awarded the Swiss Music Prize, which is given to musicians who have made significant contributions to the Swiss music scene. In 1991, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a non-German citizen. Flury continued to perform and record throughout his career, and he remained an active and respected member of the classical music community until his death in 2013.
