Period:RomanticGenre:SymphonyVladimir Ruzdjak was a Croatian composer, conductor, and music educator who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He was born on January 1, 1929, in the city of Osijek, Croatia. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist, which exposed him to music at an early age. Ruzdjak showed a keen interest in music from a young age and began studying the piano and violin when he was just six years old. Ruzdjak's musical education began at the Music School in Osijek, where he studied under the guidance of his father. He later continued his studies at the Zagreb Academy of Music, where he studied composition with Stjepan Sulek and conducting with Igor Markevitch. Ruzdjak graduated from the academy in 1953 with a degree in composition and conducting. After completing his studies, Ruzdjak began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras in Croatia. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented conductor and was appointed as the principal conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra in 1958. He held this position for over a decade and conducted numerous concerts with the orchestra, both in Croatia and abroad. In addition to his work as a conductor, Ruzdjak was also a prolific composer. He wrote music in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, and vocal music. His compositions were often inspired by Croatian folk music and culture, and he was known for his use of traditional Croatian melodies and rhythms in his works. One of Ruzdjak's most significant achievements as a composer was his opera "The Legend of the Love of Radisa and Dobrila," which premiered in 1963. The opera was based on a Croatian folk tale and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. It was later performed in numerous countries, including the United States, Germany, and Italy. Ruzdjak's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1961, he was awarded the Vladimir Nazor Award, one of the highest honors for artists in Croatia. He was also awarded the Order of Danica Hrvatska, one of the highest honors in Croatia, in 1998. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Ruzdjak was also a dedicated music educator. He taught at the Zagreb Academy of Music for over 30 years, where he mentored numerous young musicians and composers. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in the music industry. Ruzdjak continued to compose and conduct music well into his later years. He passed away on December 8, 2016, at the age of 87.
