Rena Sharon was a renowned classical music artist who made significant contributions to the world of music as a pianist, teacher, and mentor. Born in Vancouver, Canada, on August 22, 1956, Sharon showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Sharon received her early music education at the Vancouver Academy of Music, where she studied with renowned pianist Lee Kum-Sing. She later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree. She continued her studies at the University of British Columbia, where she received her Master of Music degree. Throughout her career, Sharon performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, both in Canada and internationally. She was known for her expressive and nuanced playing, and her ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music she performed. Some of her most notable performances include her debut recital at the Vancouver Playhouse in 1980, her performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1982, and her performance of Schumann's Piano Quintet with the Penderecki String Quartet in 1995. In addition to her performing career, Sharon was also a highly respected teacher and mentor. She taught at the University of British Columbia for over 30 years, where she was known for her dedication to her students and her ability to inspire them to reach their full potential. Many of her students went on to have successful careers in music, and she was widely regarded as one of the most influential music educators in Canada. Sharon was also a passionate advocate for the arts, and worked tirelessly to promote classical music in her community. She was a founding member of the Vancouver Chamber Music Society, and served as its artistic director for many years. She was also a member of the board of directors of the Vancouver Recital Society, and was instrumental in bringing many world-renowned musicians to Vancouver to perform. Throughout her career, Sharon received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the world of music. In 1997, she was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honors, for her contributions to music education and her advocacy for the arts. She was also the recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Tragically, Sharon's life was cut short when she passed away on December 21, 2017, at the age of 61. Her death was a great loss to the music community, and she was mourned by many who had been touched by her music and her teaching. However, her legacy lives on through the many students she inspired, the music she performed, and the organizations she helped to build and support.
