Born on August 22, 1958, in Hamburg, Germany, Koch showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Gerhard Oppitz, at the age of ten. Oppitz recognized Koch's talent and potential and became his mentor, guiding him through his musical journey. Koch's talent and dedication to music paid off when he won the first prize at the Jugend musiziert competition in 1974. This was a significant achievement for the young musician and marked the beginning of his successful career in music. Koch continued to hone his skills and went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, Rosl Schmid. He graduated with honors in 1982 and went on to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Koch's talent and dedication to music soon caught the attention of the music world, and he began performing at major concert halls and festivals around the world. He made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonic in 1984, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. This was a significant moment in Koch's career, and he received critical acclaim for his performance. Koch's career continued to flourish, and he went on to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also performed at major music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Lucerne Festival.
