Born on May 15, 1920, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Torchinsky was the son of Russian immigrants who had settled in Canada. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in music and began playing the trumpet at the age of 12. Torchinsky's talent was quickly recognized, and he was soon playing in local bands and orchestras. He continued to hone his skills and eventually went on to study at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. There, he studied under the tutelage of William Vacchiano, who was the principal trumpet player for the New York Philharmonic. After completing his studies, Torchinsky began his professional career as a trumpet player. He played with several orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the NBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He also played with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Torchinsky's talent as a trumpet player was widely recognized, and he was invited to perform at several prestigious events. In 1955, he was invited to perform at the inauguration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He also performed at the White House for President John F. Kennedy and at the United Nations for the General Assembly. In addition to his performances, Torchinsky was also a respected teacher. He taught at several institutions, including the Juilliard School of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Toronto. He also gave masterclasses and workshops around the world. Torchinsky's contributions to the world of music were recognized with several awards and honors. In 1975, he was awarded the Order of Canada, which is the highest civilian honor in Canada. He was also awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. Torchinsky continued to perform and teach until his death on January 13, 2009, at the age of 88.
