Jeanne Amiele was a French classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1927, in Paris, France. She was the daughter of a French mother and a Russian father who was a violinist. Her father's love for music inspired her to pursue a career in music. Amiele began her musical training at the age of six, studying the piano with her mother. She later studied at the Paris Conservatory, where she was a student of Marguerite Long and Jacques Février. She also studied with Yvonne Lefébure and Nadia Boulanger. Amiele made her debut as a concert pianist in 1947, at the age of 20, performing with the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire. She quickly gained recognition for her virtuosity and musicality, and soon became one of the most sought-after pianists of her generation. Throughout her career, Amiele performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She also performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Amiele was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of French composers, including Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and Francis Poulenc. She was also a champion of contemporary music, and premiered many works by living composers. One of the highlights of Amiele's career was her performance of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan in 1959. The performance was widely acclaimed, and helped to establish Amiele as one of the leading interpreters of Ravel's music. Amiele was also a prolific recording artist, and recorded many of the works she was known for, including Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, Debussy's Images, and Poulenc's Piano Concerto. Her recordings were widely praised for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity. In addition to her performing career, Amiele was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Paris Conservatory from 1966 to 1987, and her students included many of today's leading pianists. Amiele received many awards and honors throughout her career, including the Grand Prix du Disque, the Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros, and the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. She was also a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in France. Amiele continued to perform and teach until her death on January 23, 2018, at the age of 90. She left behind a legacy as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, and a champion of French music and contemporary composers.
