Oscar Lopez Ruiz was a renowned Argentine guitarist, composer, and arranger who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He was born on December 25, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His father was a guitarist, and his mother was a pianist, which influenced his interest in music from a young age. Ruiz began playing the guitar at the age of six and was soon performing in public. He studied music at the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires, where he learned classical guitar and composition. He also studied with renowned guitarists such as Abel Carlevaro and Eduardo Falú. In the 1950s, Ruiz began his professional career as a guitarist, playing in various orchestras and ensembles. He also worked as a session musician, recording with many famous Argentine artists. In the 1960s, he became a member of the Astor Piazzolla Quintet, where he played guitar and arranged music. This collaboration with Piazzolla was a significant turning point in Ruiz's career, as it exposed him to new musical styles and techniques. Ruiz's talent as a composer and arranger soon became evident, and he began to receive commissions to write music for films, television, and theater. He also composed and arranged music for various ensembles, including symphony orchestras, chamber groups, and jazz bands. His compositions and arrangements were characterized by their intricate harmonies, rhythmic complexity, and melodic beauty. In the 1970s, Ruiz formed his own ensemble, the Oscar Lopez Ruiz Quartet, which featured some of the best musicians in Argentina. In 1980, he was awarded the Konex Award, one of the most prestigious awards in Argentina, for his contributions to the field of music. He also received the National Prize for Music in 1997, which is the highest honor given to a musician in Argentina. Ruiz continued to perform and record throughout his career, collaborating with many famous musicians and ensembles. He recorded over 30 albums as a solo artist and as a member of various groups. His music was characterized by its virtuosity, creativity, and emotional depth. In addition to his work as a musician, Ruiz was also a respected music educator. He taught at the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires and at the University of La Plata. He also gave masterclasses and workshops throughout Argentina and Europe, sharing his knowledge and expertise with aspiring musicians. Ruiz passed away on June 10, 2009, at the age of 72.
