The Vilnius String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1965 in Vilnius, Lithuania, by four young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The founding members were Algirdas Budrys (violin), Darius Dikcius (violin), Sabina Vasaite (viola), and Augustinas Vasiliauskas (cello). The quartet quickly gained recognition for their outstanding musicianship and unique interpretation of classical works. They began performing extensively throughout Lithuania and soon expanded their reach to other countries in Europe. In 1972, the quartet won first prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Liege, Belgium, which marked a significant milestone in their career. Over the years, the Vilnius String Quartet has undergone several changes in its lineup. However, the quartet has always maintained its high standards of musicianship and dedication to the art of chamber music. The current members of the quartet are Arturas Sirkus (violin), Darius Dikcius (violin), Giedrius Gelgotas (viola), and Augustinas Vasiliauskas (cello). The Vilnius String Quartet has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. They have collaborated with many renowned musicians, including pianist Martha Argerich, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, and violinist Gidon Kremer. One of the highlights of the quartet's career was their performance at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. They were the first Lithuanian musicians to perform at the Olympics, and their performance was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The Vilnius String Quartet has also recorded extensively, with over 30 albums to their name. Their recordings have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Vilnius String Quartet is also committed to promoting the art of chamber music through education and outreach programs. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians in Lithuania and other countries, and have also established a chamber music festival in Vilnius.
