Peter DeRose was an American composer and pianist who was born on March 10, 1900, in New York City. He was the youngest of five children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist and his mother was a singer, and they encouraged their children to pursue music. DeRose began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended the New York College of Music and later studied at the Juilliard School of Music. He also took private lessons with renowned pianist and composer Percy Grainger. In the 1920s, DeRose began his career as a songwriter and composer. He wrote popular songs for Broadway shows and films, including "Deep Purple," which became a hit in 1939. He also wrote music for radio and television programs. DeRose's most famous composition is "On a Slow Boat to China," which he wrote in 1948. The song became a hit for singer Kay Kyser and has since been recorded by many other artists. Other notable compositions by DeRose include "The Lamp is Low," "I'll Never Smile Again," and "You're My Everything." DeRose was known for his romantic and sentimental style of music. His compositions often featured lush orchestration and beautiful melodies. He was also a skilled pianist and often performed his own works. In addition to his work as a composer, DeRose was also a successful businessman. He founded his own music publishing company, Peter DeRose Music, which published many of his own compositions as well as those of other composers. DeRose continued to compose and perform music throughout his life. He died on April 23, 1953, at the age of 53. His legacy as a composer and pianist lives on through his many compositions and recordings.
