He was the son of a professional singer and grew up in a musical family. From a young age, Greene showed a keen interest in music and began singing in his local church choir. He later went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he honed his skills as a baritone. Greene's career in classical music began in the 1950s when he joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, a renowned British opera company that specialized in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. He quickly became a popular member of the company and was known for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence. During his time with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, Greene performed in numerous productions, including The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, and H.M.S. Pinafore. In the 1960s, Greene began to branch out from his work with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company and started to perform in other operas and musicals. He made his West End debut in 1961 in the musical Irma La Douce, and went on to perform in a number of other productions, including The Sound of Music, Camelot, and The King and I. Greene's powerful voice and commanding stage presence made him a popular performer, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after baritones in the UK. One of Greene's most notable performances came in 1968 when he was cast as Javert in the original London production of Les Misérables.
