From a young age, Mitchell showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Mitchell's parents were both musicians, and they played a significant role in shaping his musical career. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Mitchell began his formal music education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He showed exceptional talent and quickly progressed through the grades. By the time he was a teenager, Mitchell was already performing in local concerts and recitals. In 1968, Mitchell was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers of the time, including Vladimir Horowitz and Claudio Arrau. Mitchell's talent and dedication to music were evident, and he quickly became one of the top students in his class. After graduating from Juilliard, Mitchell began his professional music career. He performed in various concerts and recitals across the United States and Europe. His performances were highly acclaimed, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented classical pianists of his generation. In 1975, Mitchell won the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The competition, held every four years, is one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world. Mitchell's performance was outstanding, and he impressed the judges with his technical skill and musical interpretation. The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition was a turning point in Mitchell's career. It opened up new opportunities for him, and he began performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. He also started recording his music, and his albums quickly became popular among classical music enthusiasts. Over the years, Mitchell performed with some of the most renowned orchestras in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also collaborated with other musicians, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman. In 1987, Mitchell was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Soloist Performance. The award was for his album, "Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Nos. 8, 14 & 23." The album was a critical and commercial success, and it cemented Mitchell's reputation as one of the greatest classical pianists of his time. Throughout his career, Mitchell remained dedicated to music education. He taught at various music schools and universities, including the Juilliard School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music.
