Christopher Tyler Nickel is a contemporary classical music composer who was born on May 22, 1980, in Vancouver, Canada. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. From a young age, Nickel was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, which sparked his interest in music composition. Nickel began his formal music education at the University of British Columbia, where he studied composition under the guidance of Stephen Chatman. He later went on to pursue a Master's degree in composition at the University of Toronto, where he studied with Gary Kulesha. During his time at the University of Toronto, Nickel was awarded the prestigious Glenn Gould Composition Prize, which recognizes outstanding achievement in music composition. Throughout his career, Nickel has composed a wide range of works, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, and vocal music. One of his most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which was commissioned by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2010.
