Role:Composer Conductor PerformerNicholas Deyoe is a contemporary classical music composer, conductor, and guitarist. He was born on December 14, 1985, in San Francisco, California. Deyoe grew up in a musical family, with his mother being a pianist and his father a guitarist. He started playing the guitar at the age of six and began composing music at the age of 12. Deyoe attended the University of California, San Diego, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition in 2007. He then went on to earn a Master of Music in Composition from the California Institute of the Arts in 2009. During his time at CalArts, Deyoe studied with composers Michael Pisaro, James Tenney, and Mark Trayle. Deyoe's music is known for its complexity and experimentation. He often incorporates extended techniques and unconventional instrumentation into his compositions. His works have been performed by ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the International Contemporary Ensemble, and the Talea Ensemble. One of Deyoe's most notable works is his chamber opera, "The Mantle," which premiered in 2015 at the REDCAT theater in Los Angeles. The opera is based on a short story by Nikolai Gogol and tells the story of a man who becomes possessed by a magical cloak. The production was praised for its innovative staging and Deyoe's haunting score. In addition to his work as a composer, Deyoe is also an accomplished conductor. He is the founder and artistic director of the experimental music ensemble, WasteLAnd, which he formed in 2013. The ensemble is dedicated to performing new and experimental works by contemporary composers. Deyoe has received numerous awards and honors for his work as a composer. In 2015, he was awarded a grant from the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University. He was also a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his work, "Lullaby 4." In 2017, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition. Deyoe's music has been described as "fascinating and challenging" by the Los Angeles Times and "brilliantly crafted" by The New Yorker. He continues to push the boundaries of contemporary classical music and is considered one of the most exciting young composers working today.More....
