Norbert Moret is a Swiss composer who was born on July 14, 1921, in Moutier, Switzerland. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a conductor and his mother a pianist. Moret began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his mother. He later went on to study at the Geneva Conservatory, where he was taught by notable composers such as Frank Martin and Arthur Honegger. Moret's early compositions were heavily influenced by the works of his teachers, as well as by the music of the French Impressionists. However, he soon began to develop his own unique style, which was characterized by a blend of tonal and atonal elements, as well as by his use of unconventional instruments and techniques. One of Moret's most notable works is his opera "Le temps scellé," which was premiered in 1960 at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. The opera, which is based on a play by Jean-Paul Sartre, tells the story of a man who is trapped in a room with no way out. The work was praised for its innovative use of electronic music, as well as for its powerful and emotional score. Moret's other notable works include his "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was premiered in 1956, and his "Symphony No. 1," which was premiered in 1963. Both works showcase Moret's unique style, with the concerto featuring a virtuosic piano part and the symphony featuring a blend of tonal and atonal elements. Throughout his career, Moret received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1972, he was awarded the Prix de la Ville de Paris for his opera "Le temps scellé," and in 1988, he was awarded the Grand Prix suisse de musique for his lifetime of work. He also served as a professor of composition at the Geneva Conservatory from 1966 to 1986, where he taught a new generation of composers. Moret continued to compose music well into his later years, with his final work, "Le temps qui dure," being premiered in 2016, just a few months before his death at the age of 95. His legacy as a composer and educator continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
