He was a violinist and a founding member of the Juilliard String Quartet, one of the most celebrated chamber music ensembles in the world. Koff began his musical journey at a young age, studying the violin with his father, who was a professional violinist. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1950. Koff continued his studies at the school, earning his Master of Music degree in 1951. In 1946, Koff joined the United States Army and served as a member of the 7th Army Symphony Orchestra in Germany. During his time in the army, Koff had the opportunity to perform in various concerts and recitals throughout Europe. After completing his military service, Koff returned to the United States and began his professional career as a violinist. In 1949, he joined the Juilliard String Quartet, which had been founded just a year earlier. The quartet consisted of Koff on violin, Robert Mann on violin, Raphael Hillyer on viola, and Arthur Winograd on cello. The Juilliard String Quartet quickly gained recognition for their exceptional musicianship and innovative approach to chamber music. They were known for their precise and dynamic performances, as well as their commitment to exploring new and challenging repertoire. Throughout his career with the Juilliard String Quartet, Koff performed in countless concerts and recitals around the world. The quartet also recorded numerous albums, including works by Beethoven, Bartok, and Schoenberg. In addition to his work with the Juilliard String Quartet, Koff was also a respected soloist and chamber musician. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Koff was also a dedicated teacher, and he served on the faculty of the Juilliard School for over 40 years. He was known for his passionate and insightful approach to teaching, and he inspired countless students to pursue careers in music. Throughout his career, Koff received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1986, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government.
