The duo has gained a reputation for their exceptional performances of classical music, particularly the works of Felix Mendelssohn. Mary Ellen Haupert, a native of Wisconsin, began playing the violin at the age of six. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Music degree from the University of Minnesota. Nicholas Phillips, originally from Missouri, began playing the piano at the age of four. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Master of Music degree from the University of Minnesota. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and has won numerous awards and competitions. The Mendelssohn Duo takes its name from the German composer Felix Mendelssohn, who is known for his beautiful and lyrical music. The duo has a particular affinity for Mendelssohn's works, and has performed many of his pieces in their concerts. One of the highlights of the Mendelssohn Duo's career was their performance at the 2010 National Flute Association Convention in Anaheim, California. They were joined by flutist Stephanie Jutt for a program of Mendelssohn's music, which was very well received by the audience. In addition to their performances of Mendelssohn's music, the duo has also explored other composers and styles. They have performed works by Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, and many others. They are particularly interested in promoting the music of contemporary composers, and have premiered several new works by living composers. The Mendelssohn Duo has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances. They were the winners of the 2007 National Federation of Music Clubs Ellis Duo Piano Competition, and were finalists in the 2008 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition in Boston. They have also been featured on several radio programs, including Wisconsin Public Radio's "Midday" and "Simply Folk." In addition to their performances, the Mendelssohn Duo is also committed to music education. They have given masterclasses and workshops at universities and music schools throughout the United States, and have worked with students of all ages and levels. Overall, the Mendelssohn Duo is a talented and dedicated ensemble that has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music.
