After completing his studies, Blackledge began his career as a concert pianist, performing in various venues across the UK. He quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional talent and was soon invited to perform at major music festivals around the world. In 1976, he made his debut at the Edinburgh International Festival, where he received critical acclaim for his performance of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor. Over the years, Blackledge continued to perform at major music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the BBC Proms, and the Tanglewood Music Festival. He also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Blackledge's most memorable performances was his rendition of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1982.
