The RCA Victor Chorale was a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1940 by the RCA Victor record label. The ensemble was made up of some of the most talented singers in the United States, and it quickly became one of the most respected and renowned choral groups in the world. The founding of the RCA Victor Chorale was the brainchild of the legendary conductor and composer Leopold Stokowski. Stokowski had been working with RCA Victor for several years, and he saw the potential for the record label to create its own choral group that could perform and record some of the most beautiful and complex choral music in the world. Stokowski handpicked the members of the RCA Victor Chorale, choosing only the most talented and experienced singers from across the United States. The ensemble was made up of 32 singers, including 16 men and 16 women, and they were all trained in the classical choral tradition. The RCA Victor Chorale quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and they were soon in high demand for performances and recordings. The ensemble recorded dozens of albums for RCA Victor, including some of the most iconic choral works of all time. One of the highlights of the RCA Victor Chorale's career was their performance of Handel's Messiah in 1947. The performance was conducted by Stokowski himself, and it was recorded live at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The recording was a huge success, and it remains one of the most beloved recordings of Messiah to this day. Another major highlight of the RCA Victor Chorale's career was their performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 1951. The performance was conducted by Arturo Toscanini, one of the most famous conductors of the 20th century, and it was recorded live at Carnegie Hall. The recording was a huge success, and it remains one of the most iconic recordings of the Ninth Symphony. The RCA Victor Chorale also performed and recorded many other choral works, including Bach's Mass in B Minor, Mozart's Requiem, and Verdi's Requiem. The ensemble was known for their precision and clarity of sound, and they were praised for their ability to bring out the beauty and complexity of the music they performed. In addition to their recordings and performances, the RCA Victor Chorale also won several awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1950, the ensemble won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance - Choral or Instrumental (other than Concerto or Opera) for their recording of Brahms' A German Requiem. The ensemble was also nominated for several other Grammy Awards throughout their career. The RCA Victor Chorale disbanded in the early 1960s, but their legacy lives on through their recordings and performances. The ensemble was a true testament to the power and beauty of choral music, and they remain one of the most beloved and respected choral groups in history.
