She was the daughter of a famous Norwegian actor, Per Aabel, and a renowned Norwegian actress, Henny Skjønberg. Foss grew up in a family of artists and was exposed to the world of theater and music from a very young age. Foss began her career as an actress in 1935 when she made her debut in the play "The Women's House" at the National Theater in Oslo. She quickly gained recognition for her talent and was soon offered leading roles in several plays and films. In 1940, Foss made her film debut in the Norwegian film "Tørres Snørtevold." In addition to her acting career, Foss was also a talented singer. She began singing in public in the 1940s and quickly became a popular performer in Norway. Her repertoire included classical music, operettas, and popular songs. One of Foss's most notable performances was in the 1954 production of the operetta "The Merry Widow" at the National Theater in Oslo. Foss played the lead role of Hanna Glawari and received critical acclaim for her performance. The production was a huge success and ran for over 200 performances. Foss also had a successful career as a recording artist. She recorded several albums of classical music and popular songs, including "Wenche Foss synger Edvard Grieg" (Wenche Foss sings Edvard Grieg) and "Wenche Foss synger Kurt Weill" (Wenche Foss sings Kurt Weill). In addition to her work in the arts, Foss was also a prominent social activist. She was a member of the Norwegian Labor Party and was involved in several political and social causes throughout her life. Foss received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1955, she was awarded the King's Medal of Merit for her contributions to Norwegian culture. She was also awarded the Order of St. Olav in 1970 and the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit in 1987. Foss continued to perform and act well into her later years. She passed away on March 28, 2011, at the age of 93.
