Gilda Dalla Rizza was an Italian soprano who was born on October 18, 1892, in Verona, Italy. She was the daughter of a musician and began her musical training at a young age. Her father recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Dalla Rizza made her operatic debut in 1912 at the Teatro Verdi in Padua, Italy, in the role of Micaela in Georges Bizet's "Carmen." She quickly gained recognition for her powerful voice and dramatic stage presence. In 1913, she made her debut at La Scala in Milan, Italy, in the role of Gilda in Giuseppe Verdi's "Rigoletto." This performance was a turning point in her career, and she became one of the most sought-after sopranos in Italy. Dalla Rizza's career continued to flourish throughout the 1910s and 1920s. She performed in many of the major opera houses in Italy, including La Scala, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, and the Teatro Regio in Turin. She also performed in other European countries, including France, Spain, and Germany. One of Dalla Rizza's most famous roles was that of Mimi in Giacomo Puccini's "La Bohème." She first performed this role in 1919 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, Italy. Her performance was widely praised, and she went on to perform the role many times throughout her career. In addition to her operatic performances, Dalla Rizza also performed in concerts and recitals. She was known for her interpretations of Italian art songs and was particularly admired for her performances of the music of Francesco Paolo Tosti. Dalla Rizza's career slowed down in the 1930s, and she retired from the stage in 1935. However, she continued to teach singing and remained active in the music world. She also made occasional appearances on the radio and in recordings. Throughout her career, Dalla Rizza received many honors and awards. In 1924, she was awarded the title of "Cavaliere" by the Italian government for her contributions to the arts. She was also awarded the title of "Commendatore" in 1932. In 1952, she was awarded the "Medaglia d'Oro" by the city of Verona in recognition of her contributions to the arts. Dalla Rizza died on July 5, 1975, in Milan, Italy, at the age of 82. She is remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of the early 20th century and as a pioneer in the world of Italian opera. Her recordings continue to be admired by music lovers around the world.
