Matti Rouvali is a Finnish conductor who has quickly risen to prominence in the classical music world. Born on January 5, 1985, in Tampere, Finland, Rouvali grew up in a musical family. His father was a cellist in the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, and his mother was a music teacher. Rouvali began playing the violin at the age of five and later switched to the drums. Rouvali studied percussion at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he also took conducting lessons. He continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Rouvali's conducting career began in 2009 when he won the first prize in the International Sibelius Conducting Competition. Since then, Rouvali has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. One of Rouvali's most significant achievements was his appointment as the principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in 2017. He succeeded Gustavo Dudamel, who had held the position for ten years. Rouvali's tenure with the orchestra has been highly successful, and he has received critical acclaim for his performances. Rouvali has also been a guest conductor with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 2019, he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic, conducting a program of works by Sibelius, Rautavaara, and Beethoven. In addition to his work with orchestras, Rouvali is also a sought-after opera conductor. He has conducted productions of Mozart's Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro, as well as Verdi's La Traviata and Puccini's La Bohème. In 2016, he was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Finnish citizen for achievements in the arts.
