Benjamin Herman is a Dutch jazz musician and composer who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born on May 18, 1968, in London, England, Herman grew up in a musical family and was exposed to jazz at a young age. His father was a jazz musician, and his mother was a classical pianist. Herman started playing the saxophone when he was 12 years old and quickly fell in love with the instrument. Herman's family moved to the Netherlands when he was a teenager, and he began playing in local jazz clubs. He attended the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he studied with saxophonist Ferdinand Povel. After graduating, Herman formed his own band, the Benjamin Herman Quartet, which quickly gained a following in the Netherlands. In 1993, Herman released his first album, "Blue Sky Blond," which was well-received by critics and helped establish him as a rising star in the jazz world. He followed up with several more albums, including "Get in Line" (1995), "Heterogeneity" (1997), and "The Itch" (1999). Herman's music is known for its eclectic mix of styles, incorporating elements of jazz, funk, rock, and classical music. He has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Dutch pop singer Wouter Hamel, American jazz pianist Peter Beets, and Dutch rapper Typhoon. One of Herman's most notable performances was at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2003, where he played with his band New Cool Collective. The performance was a huge success and helped cement Herman's reputation as one of the top jazz musicians in the Netherlands. In addition to his work as a performer, Herman is also a prolific composer. He has written music for film, television, and theater, and has released several albums of his own compositions, including "Campert" (2006) and "Project S" (2010). Herman has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2008, he was awarded the Dutch Edison Award for Best Jazz Album for his album "Café Alto." He has also been nominated for several other Edison Awards, as well as the prestigious Dutch Popprijs award. Despite his success, Herman remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and record music, and is widely regarded as one of the most talented and innovative jazz musicians of his generation.
