Born on August 22, 1953, in New York City, Katherine grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, John Murdock, was a professional trumpet player, and her mother, Mary Murdock, was a pianist. Katherine's parents recognized her musical talent at an early age and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Katherine began playing the viola at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural aptitude for the instrument. She studied with some of the most prominent viola teachers of the time, including Karen Tuttle and William Primrose. Katherine attended the Juilliard School of Music, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1975 and a Master of Music degree in 1976. After completing her studies, Katherine began her professional career as a violist. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent and was invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. In 1977, she joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as the principal violist, a position she held for six years. During her time with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Katherine performed in some of the most famous concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. In 1983, Katherine left the Boston Symphony Orchestra to pursue a solo career. She quickly established herself as one of the leading violists of her generation and was invited to perform with some of the most prominent orchestras in the world. In 1985, she made her debut with the New York Philharmonic, performing the Walton Viola Concerto under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. The performance was a huge success, and Katherine received critical acclaim for her virtuosic playing. Over the years, Katherine has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with some of the most famous conductors of the time, including Seiji Ozawa, Sir Simon Rattle, and Zubin Mehta. In addition to her work as a soloist, Katherine is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has performed with some of the most renowned chamber ensembles in the world, including the Guarneri Quartet and the Emerson Quartet. Katherine is also a founding member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, where she has performed for over 30 years. Throughout her career, Katherine has received numerous awards and accolades for her exceptional talent. In 1985, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is one of the most prestigious awards for young musicians in the United States. In 1991, she was awarded the Naumburg Viola Competition, which is one of the most prestigious competitions for violists in the world. Katherine has also recorded extensively throughout her career. She has recorded for some of the most prominent record labels in the world, including Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, and RCA Red Seal. Her recordings have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance in 1992. In addition to her work as a performer, Katherine is also a dedicated teacher.
