Born in Vancouver, Canada, in 1974, Dunn showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He went on to study music at the University of British Columbia, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dunn continued his musical education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied conducting with James DePreist and piano with Yoheved Kaplinsky. He also studied composition with John Corigliano and Christopher Rouse. Dunn's career as a conductor began in earnest in 2002, when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He quickly made a name for himself as a talented and dynamic conductor, and in 2004 he was appointed as the music director of the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. Since then, Dunn has conducted orchestras and opera companies around the world, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
